The huge face was found in a European Space Agency image of the Carina Nebula which is between 6,500 and 10,000 light years from Earth.
A nebula is a vast cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionised gases.
The "portrait" is therefore a clear case of pareidolia - or a face in the clouds - but Scott C Waring, who edits ufosightingsdaily.com has suggested it could be a real intergalactic monument to a higher being.
Pareidolia, the phenomenon which leads us to see faces and animal shapes in the clouds or other patterns and textures, is when the brain tricks the eyes into picking out familiar objects from an otherwise jumbled scene.
Faces tend to be the most common thing seen.
