Kathmandu, Feb 21: The government has started preparations for observing Baisakh 24 as the National Press Day.
Baisakh 24 in the history of Nepali press commemorates the publication of the first newspaper in the country-–Gorkhapatra (now daily)-- published by the Gorkhapatra Corporation.
A meeting held under the coordination of Officiating Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communications Eknarayan Aryal decided to observe the National Press Day to commemorate the day the Gorkhapatra was published. The decision to this end was taken on the recommendations of the Chiefs of Ministry subordinate bodies and media experts.
Addressing the meeting, Officiating Secretary Aryal said the decision to mark the National Press Day is for the development of journalism and to recognise the journalism sector.
President of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Dr Mahendra Bista said the FNJ welcomed the government decision to observe Baisakh 24 as the National Press Day.
Press Council Nepal Chair Borna Bahadur Karki, Joint Secretaries at the Ministry of Information and Communications Ramchandra Dhakal and Raghuram Bista, National News Agency (RSS) General Manager Nirmala Acharya, Radio Nepal Executive Director Suresh Kumar Karki, Gorkhapatra General Manager Sushil Koirala, Nepal Television General Manager Laxman Humagain and freelancer journalist Dhrubahari Aryal were present in the meeting.
