Kanchanpur, Feb 14: Construction of the Kalapani-based irrigation project at Jhalari Pipladi Municipality in Kanchanpur has been delayed due to negligence on the part of the contractor.
An agreement on the implementation of project was signed last July. The implementation cost is Rs. 89 million. The project was supposed to complete within the fifteen months of the signing of the agreement, but no progress is seen yet, the locals said.
The contractor argued that it could not take the project into implementation phase due to the severe fuel crisis in the country.
The project is funded by the World Bank, Irrigation Committee Chair Laxman Dhanuk said. The construction project is expected to irrigate over 600 hectares of land.
Small farmers irrigation project getting popularity
The Small farmers irrigation project targeted at small farmers deprived of irrigation facilities has been effective. The project based on pump-set irrigation system is gaining popularity among the small farmers. This type of irrigation system has proved a boon for farmers who were unable to reap benefits from the surface irrigation system. According to the Agricultural Development Office, the pump set-based system is cheaper than the surface-based system and the office has been providing 80 per cent of the installation cost as grant assistance to farmers.
