The world, most of these have efficient water management models, whereby they have been able to utilize hydropower resource to the best extend and at the same time have also met very high environmental standards. We always talk about green energy and appreciation comes mainly from hydro power plants and most of the developed nations have such green energy plants in plenty and have lesser dependence on other sources of energy generation. Considering our vast population and demand for energy, we have a mixed model comprising of fossil fuel, nuclear, gas, hydro and other non-conventional sources of power generation. The mainstay has been coal based power projects which too are stuck in to political quagmire and scams.
One of the major concerns for Indian power sector is the availability of coal. It is estimated that at the beginning year of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2013), the coal demand would be about 772 Million Tonne, whereas the indigenous availability would be about 580.30 Million Tonne. Therefore, there is likely to be a gap of 192.54 Million Tonne, which is met through imports. While a stockpile of 30 days is to be maintained to be in a secure position, many plants are barely surviving with 4-7 days of reserves. Hydro power projects have been the second largest contributor of energy. This source of green energy generation is relegated in priority and many hydro projects are stuck in long and unending process of sanctions and approvals. Whatever be the reasons, we see huge shortfall from targets in our five year plans towards development of hydro projects which are languishing and there is little or in some cases no progress at all. Projects which could have been developed quickly are accumulating dust in project approval files or are stopped by various protesting agencies, making them totally unviable.
