Kawasoti, Feb 20: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ananda Prasad Pokharel says that only cultural and religious tourism could make the country prosperous.
He said so while inaugurating the First National Conference and Homestay Workshop of the Homestay Association Nepal at Amaltari of Tharu Homestay in Nawalparasi today.
"There is a great potential of culture tourism as the different ethnicities in the country like the Tharu, Magar, Bote and Gurung have their unique culture. We should preserve and protect this culture so as to attract tourists," Minister Pokharel said.
The Minister for Culture and Tourism announced that the Ministry would develop Nawalparasi, Rupandehi and Kapilbastu districts the components of the Greater Lumbini area as the religious tourism could be boosted only through the development of the Hindu and the Buddhist circuit.
"The government has the plan of increasing the stay of religious tourists visiting Lumbini by taking them also up to Damak in the east. The Ministry has also formulated a village-centred programme for the promotion of rural tourism," he said, adding that the homestay would also prosper like the community forest and the cooperative sectors were.
The Tourism Minister was of the view that the homestay which has started to be organised only since three years back was making the economic status of the rural folks stronger. He added that the government would provide assistance to the homestay related plans coming from the rural areas as homestay tourism also supported the local productions and culture.
CPN(UML) central member and chief of the party's tourism department, Surya Thapa suggested developing at least three model homestay in each of the federal province.
At the programme, Senior Director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Santosh Mani Nepal, TAAN president Chandra Rijal, Nepal Tourism Board member Purna Kunwar, First Vice-president of the National Tourism Entrepreneurs Organisation CN Pandey, president of Nepal Tourism Journalists Forum Bidrohi Giri and president of the Amaltari Homestay, Prem Shankar Mardaniya Tharu, UML central member Tilak Mahat among others spoke on the importance of homestay tourism.
Altogether 250 delegates from 150 homestay services operated by 70 private and 80 community initiatives from 31 districts are participating in the conference. The conference will last for two days. RSS
